Most of you have probably seen this before, but it was beautiful to watch so I decided to post it anyway. When you just want a few minutes respite, zip over and have a look.

Basic Items to Care for Your Horse

The question comes with some regularity, I'm bringing home my horse or I'm buying a horse and I need a list of basic items to have. And though this is by far not everything you may need, if you have these items you'll be able to care for your horse in a reasonable fashion. There may be other things needed, please feel free to comment and add to the list.

There may be some things on this list you may feel you don't need, but this will give you an idea of what you should have.

Halters	Complete vet kit / should include: small pair of scissors, vet rap, iodine, rubbing alcohol, a blood clotting powder
Lead ropes	Blankets - both waterproof and non-waterproof and sheet
Bug spray	Leg wraps
Fly swatters	Emergency number contact sheet
Field Feeder	Hose (for bathing & watering)
Crops	Leg Bandages (for any minor cuts and bruises)
Helmets	Hook Notches (to tie you’re horse up to the fence)
Saddles	Cross Ties (if you have a barn aisle)
Bridle hooks	Lunge line and whip
Tie ropes	Wheel barrow and pitch fork
Saddle racks	Duck tape(also good for hoof make sure not to put direct on the hair)
Bridle rack	Mane/tail detangler
Rags	Blanket racks
Gloves	Good ointment
Salt block	Wormer - check with your Veterinarian for the right type.
Fly masks	Storage containers

There's also a great book available called "Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities" that will help you determine the items you need and even design your stable area. Cherry Hill is the author and she has also included a section on horse behavior. Lots of information.

Basic Horse Sense

We've all seen the lovely pictures - horses grazing out in a beautiful pasture. But what do you really know about horses. What sort of relationship do you have?

Communication is very important with any animal and it's no different for a horse. They are unable to learn how to understand humans, so we as owners must learn to understand our horses instead.

Horses, like many animals, have a strong since of self-preservation. They run in herds like buffalo and sheep, so their instincts are to run from danger and stay within their herd for protection.

A riders goal, is to properly train a horse to follow directions rather than to following their own instincts. Obviously, they are going to resist. It's unnatural for them.

Trust is the key for this to happen and it will only come gradually. Only by spending time with your horse and interacting appropriately and consistently will you gain their trust.

Body position, movements and calls to each other are the ways horses communicate. And if you sit quietly and observe horses for long periods of time, you will begin to see the horse communicate with other horses and with humans as well.

The ears of a horse always point in the direction that has his attention. If you are riding him, you want one ear to point back toward you. Sometimes he might point both ears back.

But ears tell us other things as well. If the horse's ears begin moving front and back continuously, this indicates uncertainty. And don't misunderstand ears that are pointing back to listen with ears that are pinned flat back which means anger.

The tail of the horse is a means of communication too. A high tail means excitement in a horse while a tail that is flattened and between their legs means fear. A tail that is lashing about is a sign of irritation and annoyance. And a "kinked" tail is often a sign that your horse is about to buck, especially if he bows his back up at the same time.

And like humans, facial expressions provide clues too. A wrinkled nose can mean disgust and annoyance. And just like your pet dog or cat, when a horse bares his teeth with an open mouth, it means he's about to bite.

By becoming aware of what your horse is communicating to you, you've taken the first steps forward in your relationship and will find gaining his trust much easier.

What To Look for in a Dressage Horse

So you're looking to buy your first dressage horse and are wondering what to look for. If you're already familiar with dressage, you'll have some idea what you want and need in a horse. But here are some brief ideas of things to look for:

When you're riding him, focus on how his gait feels and how he responds to your signals. When mounting, does he sidestep or fidget? Does he halt easily? Do you have to fight him for control over this head? Does he seem to follow your commands easily? Did you have to use your crop at all? If so, how often?
Observe him when someone else is riding him - ask yourself the same questions, along with: Is he a fluid, graceful mover? Do the operations appear to come naturally to him? Is he stiff at all? Where can he improve?
When tacking him: Did he accept the tack easily? Did he have a bad reaction to any of the tack? Did he take the bit without a problem, or did you have to press his jaw? Does he wear any extra tack? If so, for what reason?
When grooming him: Did he have a negative response to any part of the grooming? Did he lift his feet easily when you were picking them out? Are there any spots where he didn’t like you to touch?
In general: Did he ever try to nip you? Does he appear healthy? What is your over-all feeling about him? How stubborn, on a scale from 1-10? How willing, on a scale from 1-10? Is he a pleasure to work with, or were you disappointed in some aspects of his behavior? How does he act around other people and horses? What problems were there?

As mentioned before, once you have done dressage for a while, you will have a good idea of what you want, but this is a good list of things to look for.

What About the Riders Hair at Western Horse Shows?

So, what's the correct way to style your hair for western horse shows? Does it really matter or are there less stringent though just as important rules for Western shows as there are at English shows?

Well the most important is how your horse looks and how you and he/she work together. However, it's still very important how your hair looks. You want to make sure your hair is off your face, out of your eyes and that you smile.

Depending what type event it is should determine your hair style. If you're demonstrating horsemanship, you might want to french braid your hair or put it in a bun at the nape of your neck. But if you're just at a western pleasure show, a pony tail or even have it lose would be fine.

But no matter how you wear your hair, just remember your western hat.
