Horses for Dressage – What Breed is Best?
By Horse Talk | June 4, 2009

So, what is considered the best breed for Dressage? Any breed you choose.
Dressage is a French term, most commonly translated to mean "training". But in the context we are using here, it means competitive horse training.
So whether you choose to train a Morgan, Thoroughbred, Percherons, Trakhena or any other horse, is not the point, it's the training that matters.
The benefits are the complete understanding of movement that you gain. You understand balance and movement, and when to signal based on leg positions, and the theory of movement, the building blocks to achieve that movement, and much more. It is an art…and is unbelievably exciting when you master a movement.
The skills of basic dressage can be used in, and increase your skill in, EVERY other riding discipline.
You can have fun - and even win - in dressage with absolutely any breed. Most of the upper levels are dominated by Warmbloods (horses somewhere in the middle between the Cold Bloods - heavy draft horses and the Hot Bloods - like the Arabian or Thoroughbred). But in the beginning, there is absolutely no reason to go out and spend a lot of money for a Warmblood.
